[Compost Schedule]

Active Bin

The Active Bin contains new material to compost. Place all new materials in this bin. For optimal compost, this bin requires a 30:1 ratio of carbon:nitrogren.

Leaf Bin

The Leaf Bin contains only leaves and other dry, carboniferous material (such as dry staw or weeds). Never place Household Waste in this bin.

Curing Bin

The Curing Bin contains last year's compost. Do not add new material of any kind to this bin.

This compost is "curing," or breaking down without new inputs, for one year. Two things break down pathogenic micro-organisms in compost: high heat, and time. You can see from the thermometer in the active bin that a portion of the compost is 120 degrees. In addition to this sustained high temperature, which breaks down bacteria that can harm humans & livestock, the compost rests for one year. The long time period further breaks down any remaining harmful micro-organisms, resulting in a high-quality finished compost containing many micro-organisms beneficial for plant growth, disease resistance, and healthy soil culture. No pathogenic micro-organisms remain.
